How I overcame my fear of public speaking

You may have heard me mention my recent TEDx talk quite a bit lately—I can’t help it, it’s been on my mind since its release a few days ago! If you haven’t had the chance to watch it yet, I’d truly appreciate you leaving a comment if you do.

How I overcame my fear of public speaking

Believe it or not, there was a time when the mere thought of public speaking filled me with dread. I shied away from it for most of my life. But now, there’s no holding me back!

In my work, I often encounter clients who grapple with similar confidence issues, whether it’s speaking in public, promoting themselves in business, or dealing with social anxiety. These challenges are typically accompanied by frustration and low self-esteem, fueled by negative self-talk. Yet, the idea of lacking confidence is merely a limiting belief—a belief that can be reshaped into something empowering.

Consider this scenario: a young girl, consistently picked last for team activities at school, internalises the belief that she’s not good enough or likable. Over time, these beliefs become deeply ingrained, affecting various aspects of her life as she grows older. For example, it may manifest in an unwillingness to apply for a job or ask someone out on a date. The good news is, we aren’t to blame for these beliefs—they’re shaped by our experiences. And even better news: we have the power to change them.

Two powerful techniques for transforming beliefs are Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) and Matrix Re-imprinting. EFT, as discussed in my TEDx talk, allows for rapid belief shifts by pinpointing associated emotions and memories, then gently tapping on specific pressure points while acknowledging these feelings. This process discharges emotional responses, allowing for a reassessment of beliefs. Even small changes can lead to significant shifts in behaviour and outlook.

Discovering EFT was a turning point in my life, leading me to realise my purpose and embark on a journey of personal transformation. With Matrix Re-imprinting, I delved even deeper, identifying the root causes of my lack of confidence. By revisiting traumatic memories and offering my younger self the understanding and support she needed, I was able to clear subconscious blocks.  It really is because of these tools that myself and my clients are able to overcome our fears and do big things like TED talks and I’m truly excited for what’s next for all of us.

Once learned, these techniques empower individuals to address day-to-day stress and anxiety independently, without requiring the presence of a practitioner fostering increased confidence, joy, and freedom over time. They’re simple yet profoundly effective tools that belong in everyone’s toolkit.
